Hear, O Israel! The LORD is our God, the LORD is one! You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might.
Deuteronomy 6:4-5 NIV
Jesus replied: Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.
Matthew 22:37 NIV
How are you enjoying the crisp Fall weather? The leaves on the trees are turning, and the cool nip in the air makes the air seem brighter and cleaner. The smells and tastes of Fall are also in the air sharp, fresh pine (depending on where you live), pumpkin, apples and spices like cinnamon.
The change in seasons reflects a visible shift; and knowing we have entered the last quarter of the year, we look forward with anticipation to the holidays and the New Year beyond. Many are purchasing planners and making plans in every area of life: personal, business, academic. It makes sense to leverage the season and be prepared!
Yes, Fall is here and the season has shifted. It’s time to make a corresponding shift in our focus and our thinking. With the advance of Daylight Savings Time, here in the United States we “fall back” and move our clocks back one hour. As we approach the end of 2015, I want to encourage you to “fall back” in another way: Let’s “fall back” in love with Jesus!
Let’s fall back in love with prayer and seeking God’s face instead of His hand. Let’s fall back into fasting; engaging in what the saints of old termed “pushing our plates back” to enter in a time of self-denial and intercessory prayer. Let’s fall back into having a hunger and thirst for righteousness and pursue God instead of material possessions and earthly titles.
Let’s fall back into treating others the way we would like to be treated. Let’s fall back into undergirding the weak and striving to restore the fallen instead of judging them. Let’s fall back into being our brother and sister’s keeper. Let’s fall back into clothing the naked and visiting the sick & imprisoned.
Let’s fall back into living holy, spirit-filled lives that bring glory and honor to God. Let’s fall back into witnessing to the lost and refusing to be ashamed of the gospel of Jesus Christ. Let’s fall back into seeking God’s kingdom first, knowing and believing that the things we need will be given to us. Let’s fall back into being so in love with Jesus we love Him with all our heart, and with all our soul and with all our minds. As we move forward, let’s fall back!
